Editorial:

In October, when Daniel Bovey first announced his candidacy for mayor, we published an article acknowledging his entry into the race and offered our early support. At that time, we had no intention of endorsing any candidate formally. As a publication, we’ve traditionally maintained neutrality, believing voters should form their own opinions without media influence. But as this campaign has unfolded—and as the urgent needs of our city have become increasingly clear—we believe it is not only appropriate, but essential, to offer our official endorsement of Daniel Bovey for Mayor of West Chicago.

This endorsement is rooted in principle, not politics. It reflects our belief that West Chicago needs leadership grounded in transparency, innovation, and accountability—qualities Daniel Bovey has consistently demonstrated. His campaign is not built on empty slogans or partisan lines, but on genuine inquiry, action, and a deep commitment to the people of this city.

From the very beginning, Bovey has shown the ability and courage to think outside the box. As a newcomer to city politics, he has taken the initiative to do extensive research and ask the hard questions others avoid. He’s conducted deep dives into some of West Chicago’s most pressing and unresolved issues—from the water billing fiasco to the concerning vacancy of the City Clerk position.

Let’s be clear: the water billing disaster happened on Mayor Ruben Pineda’s watch. It was a financial and administrative failure that left countless residents blindsided with massive, backdated bills after months—sometimes years—of incorrect or delayed billing. Many residents, unable to pay large lump sums, saw liens placed on their homes. That’s not just poor management—it’s unacceptable governance. To this day, residents are still asking for answers and accountability.

Bovey doesn’t offer excuses—he offers solutions. His proposal for an independent oversight ombudsman speaks directly to the frustration so many of us have experienced when trying to engage with City Hall. When we launched West Chicago Voice, we were met with delays, resistance, and a system that felt unwelcoming to small businesses. Sadly, our experience is not unique. Residents across the city are echoing the same concerns. Bovey listens—and he has a plan.

As a small business owner himself, he understands the challenges of navigating city bureaucracy and trying to grow something meaningful in an environment that often feels stacked against you. His platform reflects a deep understanding of the need for support, not obstruction, from local government.

More importantly, Bovey’s vision puts people at the center of governance. He believes City Hall should work with residents, not against them. His commitment to fostering meaningful civic participation, responsible development, and real transparency shows that he sees West Chicago not as a list of departments and policies—but as a community full of people who deserve to be heard and respected.

Daniel Bovey is not running to preserve the status quo—he’s running to change it. And in a city where real change has long been overdue, we believe he is exactly the kind of leader West Chicago needs.

We proudly and confidently renew our endorsement of Daniel Bovey for Mayor. Let’s vote for transparency. Let’s vote for accountability. Let’s vote for a West Chicago that works—for all of us.
